Why you need a bill splitter app
Splitting expenses manually — with spreadsheets, calculator apps, or even handwritten notes — is time-consuming and error-prone. When a group trip involves dozens of purchases across several people, tracking who paid what and who owes whom becomes genuinely difficult.
FairSplit solves this automatically. Every expense is logged, every payer is tracked, and the app computes the balance between each pair of people. When two people have paid for each other, FairSplit offsets what two people owe each other so their shared balance is easy to understand.
How to split expenses fairly — three methods
There is no single “right” way to divide a bill. The best method depends on the situation:
| Method | Best for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Equal split | Shared meals, group activities | $120 dinner ÷ 4 people = $30 each |
| Custom amounts | Different orders, different usage | Alice pays $50, Bob $35, Carol $35 |
| Percentage split | Rent, salaries proportional to income | 60% / 40% split of $1,000 rent |
Tips for tracking shared expenses with a group
- Log expenses as they happen. Waiting until the end of a trip to enter everything from memory leads to forgotten items and disputes.
- Use the invite link immediately. Share the group link before the first expense so everyone is already in and can see the running total.
- Record partial payments. If someone can only pay part of what they owe, record a settlement for the partial amount — the remaining balance stays on the ledger.
- Check balances before the trip ends. Settle up in person while you're still together — it's much easier than chasing bank transfers afterwards.
- Set a default currency per group. For international trips, create separate groups per currency, or use the group's home currency throughout.
